Akanée Yamaki (she/her)

UBC Assistant Project Coordinator - SHAWNA

Akanée Yamaki (she/her) is the Assistant Project Coordinator for the SHAWNA Project and a settler on the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. She has a strong interest in community building, food security and social justice. Through her work, Akanée hopes to help destigmatize and mitigate challenges faced by sex workers and HIV + women in Vancouver. She is an ardent advocate for harm reduction, decriminalization of sex work and the importance of meaningful connection to health care and social supports. In her spare time, Akanée runs the Downtown Women’s Art Collective that aims to support female-identified residents of the Downtown Eastside and plays music. ​
