Access to Responsive Justice

The Access to Responsive Justice Project was a UBC research project hosted in the UBC division of social medicine and funded by federal Ministry of Women and Gender Equality (PIs: Dr. Brittany Bingham, Dr. Kate Shannon). The Access to Responsive Justice Project was a community-engaged research project that aimed to document how women, Two-Spirt, trans survivors of gender-based violence experienced attempts to access justice, through legislative, alternative, and non-carceral approaches and create survivor-centred recommendations for policy reform and change.

AMPLIFY Project

AMPLIFY was a community-based participatory action research study hosted at UBC department of medicine led by PIs: Dr. Brittany Bingham and Elder Roberta Price and funded by a CIHR rapid response grant (2023-2024). The project drew upon quantitative, qualitative, Indigenous and art-based methods. The project name “AMPLIFY” represents the team's overarching goal to use research as a tool to amplify and uplift Indigenous women, Two-Spirit and gender diverse voices that are not often heard in this type of work.

Brazil-Canada Initiative to Improve Youth Sexual Health Intervention Research

The Brazil-Canada Initiative was a UBC research project funded by CIHR and lead by PI: Dr. Jean Shoveller hosted in the UBC School of Population and Public Health. The project gathered data generated in Vancouver, Canada and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to offer a rich and diverse set of opportunities to characterize opportunities and gaps in HIV treatment as prevention approaches, with a strong emphasis on population health intervention ethics.

National Evaluation of Canada’s End-Demand Work Laws

This national project funded by Social Sciences Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Grant in Gender, Work and Health was jointly hosted at UBC department of medicine/ Ottawa University department of criminology (PIs: Dr. Kate Shannon Dr. Christine Bruckert, and UBC project lead Dr. Anna-Louise Crago). The project evaluated the impact of legal reform and policy on the working conditions as well as occupational health and safety in the sex industry in Canada to assess the impact of “end-demand” sex work laws implemented by the Canadian government in 2014 on sex workers’ safety, health and human rights.

REAFFIRM Collaborative

The REAFFIRM Collaborative is hosted at SFU Faculty of Health Sciences (PI: Dr. Travis Salway). The interdisciplinary team committed to promoting 2S/LGBTQ+ health equity using a broad range of approaches, including epidemiology, qualitative research and mixed methods to explore factors contributing to health inequities and to identify strategies for improving health among 2S/LGBTQ+ populations.
